Nicaragua 2011

Nicaragua January 2011

I have a long list of countries I’d like to visit. Some I’ve already been lucky enough to see, but a journey I never thought I’d be taking was to a little country in Central America: Nicaragua. The general view of Nicaragua is that it’s just another poor and unsafe country that has been overly ruled and abused by dictators and military over the last few decades, without much recommendation to visit as a tourist- not exactly the case once you’re there.

Opportunity knocked and I took the assignment of shooting a wedding there which really changed my view about this amazing country. It’s true that its citizens may not be as fortunate as we are here, but they have the biggest hearts and eager smiles on their faces with a “no worries” kind of life. They are actually some of the most friendliest I have met traveling in such countries.

Nicaragua is full of natural phenomena- 11 volcanoes, lagoons, craters, jungles- and it is said that Nicaragua has around 5000 lakes, which for a country that small, must be half their real estate.

For a photographer this place is perfect as there is so much to see and capture: the colors, weathered buildings, textures, volcanoes, formations, the story of the people and their day to day happenings. There is a resounding innocence I noticed when looking back through the photos- what they show you is who they are, wholly and sincerely.

Char De Vazquez - I’m one of the owners of La Posada Azul, the little hotel
you photographed in San Juan Del Sur. I love your photos, and
think you caught that wonderful innocence of Nicaragua.
Much of the country is lovely for what they don’t have ,
WalMart, Office Depot, and Target.
Bravo. You are not only a very good photographer, but insightful
as well.

Saludos!
Char

Duke - Hi Char,

Thank you for such kind email and response on my photography.
I immensely had so much fun in Nicaragua and even though it was suppose to be a business trip yet the 2 days that I had off were so full of adventure.
I really think Nicaragua is still one of the most Authentic countries in The entire Americas and there is a certain innocence that comes out of people when you first meet them.

Cheers to Nicaragua.

Karleen - Duke, these are such beautiful images. Great colors, details, and portraits! I’m just curious – what’s that guy doing showing you all that money :)

March 4, 2011 - 2:22 am

Duke - I think that guy either was exchanging currency or working for a bank since he had a batch, But the audacity of him walking around with that much cash was crazy.

Erin O’Brien - Duke, this is such a lovely collection of photos! You painted such a colorful, friendly portrait of the people and of Nicaragua itself. I’ve always been interested in visiting Central America… and these photos confirm my beliefs that I wouldn’t be disappointed!
